How To Set Up A Blog

Although there are loads of cool things you can do with the other platforms I mentioned, I highly recommend Wordpress for any kind of blogging. The ease of use, flexibility and wide variety of 3rd party plugins make it one of the best Content Management Systems for blogging available.

Setting up a blog may vary per host, but BlueHost, Go Daddy and most major hosting companies support SimpleScripts and / or Fantastico. These are features available in the control panel of your hosting provider, which will enable you to install your wordpress installation without the need to set up an FTP program or any technical knowledge of Mysql or PHPMyAdmin.

The following tutorial is based off of the Bluehost standard cPanel (which I find much easier to navigate than the mess that is Godaddy btw).

Set Up A Blog Step 1

1. Navigate to your Bluehost (or respective CPanel) and look for the “Simple Scripts” link (see above)

Set Up A Blog Step 2

2. Once inside the Simple Scripts control panel, click on the “Wordpress” link.

Set Up A Blog Step 3

3. Click on the “Install” link in the Simple Scripts control panel

Set Up A Blog Step 4

4. Once inside the Simple Script set-up panel for Wordpress
  • a. Select your version
  • b. Select where you want to install Wordpress on your host
  • c. Agree to the Terms, and click on the “Complete” install button.

Set Up A Blog Step 5

5. Once the install is complete, be sure to write down your information so you don’t forget! Navigate to the respective folder that your installation exists and login with the information that was provided after your installation was complete.

Conclusion

See? It is just that easy to get a cutting edge, highly extensible, SEO friendly blog that exists on your own hosting account! For those of you who do not have the money for a hosting account, or perhaps all this is just too involved for you, I highly advise Blogger or Tumblr. They have extensive documentation on their websites on how to get your blog up and running with no upfront investment.
