A Digital Marketing Internship in Dallas That Doesn’t Suck

Do you want to work for douchebags? Go intern for any of our competitors, or really 95% of most agencies and boutiques here in Dallas – Ft Worth. Warning – If anything I’m about to say doesn’t click with you, or rubs you the wrong way, chances are you should probably just go be with your people.

You see, we can’t stand hawkish, social climbing marketing douchebags. The type that spend more time schmoozing and positioning themselves around controlling perceptions than actually doing the research and work.

That era of con artist needed for account work has gone the way of the dinosaur. Doers are in demand. D-bag agency used car salesman are out.

Now I’m going to let you in on how this business really works. The biggest, most successful agencies you are looking at right now make their margins by:

  1. Squeezing Full Time-Employees For Non-Paid Overtime
  2. Using Low Cost (or Non Paid) Interns / Junior Marketers To Fulfill Large Parts of Client Work
  3. Overcharging Clients

But they won’t tell you that. I will though. Which one of the reasons you should work for me.

I know it’s weird to have someone be so straight up with you like this right off the bat, but that’s me. That’s the heart of our core values.

If you can’t handle the T.R.U.T.H, you should really work for one of our competitors. They have all kinds of outdated, off the shelf processes and bad ideas / habits they can teach you. It’s well documented that mediocrity thrives at their shops.

The digital marketing industry is cluttered with people who are, for the most part, full of it. Full of themselves. Full of hot air. Full of overpriced steaks paid for on the backs of their clients hard work and employees blood sweat and tears.

If you come work for us, one thing is for sure. We won’t bullshit you. We will show you how this business actually works and there are parts of it that aren’t pretty. Clients can be hard to deal with. Expectations and deadlines on projects can be demanding. You have to fight for good work, and more often than not, you will have to settle for what you can do, over what you want to do if you expect to make clients happy.

I’ll save you the hassle of working for free for all summer at some digital marketing internship program at a crappy agency and tell you one of the biggest lessons you will learn in production right here and now…

It’s not about filling your portfolio with projects of good work, it’s about doing work that makes the client happy and helps them meet their business goals.

Here’s the kicker. A good percentage of the clients you will do work for in your career have unclear goals. They don’t even know what they want, but they wanted it yesterday.

They essentially pay you to help them find clarity. If you want it all laid out for you, seek employment in one of the few manufacturing plants left here in the U.S.A., because this is not an assembly line.

Remember that line when you are 10+ years into your career and look back at what you did that was good. Don’t mistake my cynicism for negativity though.

Looking back 14+ years ago (give or take a year) I looked at the more established design and marketing firms of the day and dreamed that they would pluck me up and give me a shot at this business. I learned I had to make my own way after a while, opportunities were more scarce in the early 2000’s and to be completely honest, I wasn’t all that good (yet).

My biggest hurdle was always access and opportunity. Once someone gave me a shot I would always knock it out of the park, but just to get the chance was 90% of the struggle. Generally speaking a lack of access to education and resources held me back significantly through my 20’s.

I had the dreams.

I had the drive.

I had the hustle.

I just didn’t have the money or mentorships that would have accelerated my career, or at least not the kind that many of my peers did.

I also don’t have the student loan debt they do now, so I guess it all worked out.

I say all that to say this: Now here I am all these years later able to provide that very opportunity for someone like me, who just needed a foot in the door. That within itself means a lot to me and the whole team here at AXZM.

We’re a team of people no one ever gave a chance to. Now we take market share from some of the same people who wouldn’t give us a chance. Funny how that works, eh?

We look for the loners. The ones most people misunderstand and write off. The other creative problem solvers like us who only need a foot in the door to do great things. The ones who don’t need (or want) a hand out, just a hand up.
