SEO and Search Engine Marketing with Google Insight

Last Updated March 8th,2012: Google Insight is now Google Trends

As pragmatic and straightforward as most SEOs proclaim the process of organic search engine marketing to be, it is a bit of a moving target in practice. We all (or most of us) know the fundamentals by now:

  1. Clean, Standards-Based W3C compliant code
  2. Relevant, keyword-rich content
  3. Keywords in Title tags, H1 tags, etc…
  4. Keywords in description
  5. Solid backlinks, preferably via keyword-rich anchor text
  6. Domain age
  7. Keywords in URL
  8. Regular Press Releases via PRWeb, PRNewswire & others
  9. Good keyword density to content ratio
  10. Regular content via Blogs, Tutorials, etc…
  11. Social Media channels like Facebook, Twitter & Linkedin

There are plenty more, but those are the fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization these days and I suspect for some time to come.

The thing is, when you are targeting a specific keyword phrase you think might be the best term for your organic SEO, how do you know if it is a keyword that will be well worth the years it will take to rank?

What if the term you are targeting is on it’s way out? You can verify

Verify Demand with Google insight

This is where Google insight comes in and gives you some insight on the most searched keyword phrases. Just being able to know what is being searched the most would be enough for most SEOs, but of course Google takes a step further.

The service provides a way to drill your search popularity by search terms, geographic region, category, time ranges, image searches, news and product searches and more.

Efficient Search Engine Optimization guided by Google Insight

Knowing that a keyword phrase like “Web Design” appears to be on it’s way out and mostly searched in European countries will help you delegate your time more efficiently.

Then looking at keywords like “Social Media” would suggest owning some real estate around these keywords might be a good idea in the coming years.

The days of countless hours spent chasing a keyword that fades away just as you get ranked are over if you use Google insight to confirm demand over time. This gives you more of a three dimensional view of your keywords.

You can see that a certain phrase is dying out and rather than wasting a lot of time and energy on gaining visibility for that phrase, you can put that time into targeting a phrase that is on its way up!

Our own campaigns have already seen huge results, we recommend the service to anyone who isn’t already using for their organic SEO efforts.
