WordPress Plugins for SEO

One of the great things about WordPress is its massive community. If you ever need documentation, tutorial videos, support, themes, stickers, t-shirts, or commemorative plates related to WordPress, you will seldom come across a shortage of information online about it.

Finding a solution to virtually any challenge you face is especially easy with the WordPress plugin repository. For the most part WordPress is SEO-friendly right out of the box, but there are still a lot of things that can be optimized to further enhance your website’s performance in search engines.

Know that all WordPress plugins for SEO are not created equal. There are WordPress plugins for SEO that come along every so often that completely renew your faith in humanity. These are a few of the ones that meet that criteria.

WordPress SEO by Yoast

WordPress SEO is a must have plugin for WordPress. We use it on almost every site we build in WordPress. If you are not already using it, you should be. It gives you granular control over your page / post titles and meta descriptions, permalink clean up, social graph, Twitter card, Google+ author markup, breadcrumbs and much more.

Using WordPress plugins for SEO like this will give you the freedom to control elements that would otherwise be time-consuming and cumbersome to implement, especially for non-technical users.

Simple 301 Redirects

The Simple 301 Redirects plugin does exactly what it promises: offers a simple method for redirecting requests to various pages on a site or anywhere else on the web. Simple 301 helps where WordPress can’t preserve the URL structure. 301 redirects old to new pages, effortlessly passing links along with their pagerank (or whatever).

This can be done via .htacess, but if you are looking for WordPress plugins for SEO that will redirect all your old URLs easily (without having to mess with FTP, server stuff), check it out.

SEO Smart Links

SEO Smart Links can automatically link phrases and keywords across posts and comments throughout pages, categories and tags in a blog. Its benefits make it one of the prime WordPress plugins for SEO.

It allows the set-up of self generated keywords with a set of matching URLs. It also allows the setting of nofollow attributes and open links to new windows.

WordPress Video SEO

The WordPress Video SEO plugin is another must have WordPress plugins for SEO you need in your arsenal. Unlike the WordPress SEO plugin, this one is a commercial plugin you will have to pay for, but after using it for the last few months, we can say it’s worth every bit of the money.

You can easily embed videos into your content and WordPress Video SEO does the rest of the magic for you. Your videos will start showing up in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP), similar to how Google Authorship shows your avatar, but WordPress Video SEO will show a video snippet next to your meta description for the pages you have embedded a video. Get it. Use it. Increase your click-through rate.

Coming highly recommended from some of the top industry rock stars and moguls alike, Zemanta is another one of the better WordPress plugins for SEO and blogging.

It can link old articles to new posts and return related articles from the blogosphere to display under your posts. Essentially, it gives fellow bloggers the opportunity to link to your blogs and vice-versa.

Contextual Related Posts

Display a list of related posts in websites and feeds with Contextual Related Posts. It auto alters content in websites and feeds without editing templates. It utilizes relevancy matching with titles and / or content in a post. There’s thumbnail support and output wraps in CSS classes. Outstanding WordPress plugins for SEO don’t get better than this.

Schema Creator by Raven

Schema Creator is one of the only options currently available for marking up your WordPress website with schema.org microdata. Create the schema then copy and paste the code to your site, adding additional item properties as needed. Structure data so search engines have a better understanding of your content and how to classify it.

Schema Creator helps quickly build and organize data to increase your chances to rank in search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.

nTopic Content Relevance

Based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) a concept first presented to the SEO community by Rand Fishkin in this epic Moz post, nTopic is a very interesting project in and of itself. The nTopic plugin takes it one step further and allows you to analyze your content for topical relevancy in WordPress.

It discovers relevant terms associated with the content you have written and offers suggestions for improving content with related words. It also detects phrases and words that minimize relevancy as well.

FD Feedburner Plugin

If you want to get your content indexed quickly, we suggest you use an RSS service like Feedburner. Even after you set up your Feedburner feed, if you are running WordPress, you will notice when people navigate to your default RSS feed at – yourdomain.com/feed – or – yourdomain.com/rss the feed does not redirect to your Feedburner feed.

With FD Feedburner, your can redirect your main WordPress RSS (both Blogs & Comments) feeds to Feedburner. This can also be done via .htacess, but for those who do not want to mess with anything server related, the FD Feedburner is for you. WordPress plugins for SEO.

W3Total Cache

W3 Total Cache is another one of our favorite WordPress plugins for SEO. Your website’s performance is a factor in how it gets ranked in search engines. If it’s slow and takes a long time to load, chances are that it won’t perform as well as another website that loads quickly for all users.

This is done through a variety of optimization techniques dealing with everything from sprites, compressing all images, Javascript and CSS and offloading them to a CDN to caching all the web pages and content so that it does not have to pull from the database.

With W3 Total the process of doing this is much easier and the plugin can greatly increase the load times and overall performance of your website.

I just reviewed that plugin. I don’t see anything there that is worth paying for. A lot of the things it does are freely available (schema.org, directions on Google maps). It just seems to me to be a another plugin that will have to be monitored and updated in a WordPress install.

Excellent! I completely agree with you. I use most of these plug-ins, as well, but had not heard of nTopic. Going to be installing it ASAP to give it a try.

I must say, this post is spot on for anyone that is new to WordPress and/or SEO.

I am pretty new to WordPress and have been teaching myself everything I needed to know. Have been using Yoast for SEO for all my websites on WordPress, but didn’t even know about the Video SEO plugin they had. Can’t wait to give it a try and see the results.

Also, the 301 redirect plugin is one that I am sure most WordPress experts know about and use, but like I said, being new to this, I had no idea.

Thanks for this. I will be bookmarking this page and hopefully taking advantage of many of these plugins suggested.
